17 traffic deaths reported in Georgia over the July 4 travel period

Seventeen traffic deaths were reported by the Georgia State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies over the Independence Day travel period, according to a press release by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Georgia State Troopers investigated 620 crashes that resulted in 260 injuries and 11 deaths. Also, 294 DUI arrests were made. Overall, 9,945 citations and 14,767 warnings were issued.

Local police and sheriff’s departments reported fatalities in  Richmond County, Cherokee County, Gwinnett County, Columbus, and Atlanta.

The holiday travel period this year began at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.
