Five Will Vie for Open Smyrna City Council Seat Nov. 7

There will be plenty of competition for the Smyrna City Council’s open Ward 3 seat this fall.

No fewer than five candidates qualified at city hall Monday through Wednesday, each cashing in a $567 qualifying fee in hopes of winning a seat on the city’s governing body on election day, Nov. 7.

The five candidates are music recording artist Maryline Blackburn, Jeff Carter, who works in commercial real estate, Capitol Strategy Group owner Travis Lindley, attorney Adam P. Taylor and Marshall A. Moon, who works in security. The election is officially nonpartisan.

The seat was vacated by former city councilwoman Teri Anulewicz, who was first elected in 2007. Anulewicz resigned from her position earlier this month to run for Georgia House District 42, where she faces no opposition and is expected to easily win the seat. That position came open when former District 42 representative Stacey Evans resigned to run for Georgia governor, creating a domino effect.

Ward 3 consists mostly of central Smyrna, including the village green and City Hall. The eastern portion of the ward is bordered by Spring Road and Village Parkway, while the western portion includes areas along Concord Road and South Cobb Drive. A full ward map can be found at this link.

Two candidates took the opportunity to speak at Monday’s Smyrna city council meeting. Lindley said he’s a Campbell High School graduate, member of Smyrna First United Methodist Church, president of the Concord Lake Village Homeowners’ Association and member of the Smyrna Downtown Development Authority board.

“I’m excited about the campaign. There’s been a lot of chatter about this campaign and the state house seat,” Lindley said. “I look forward to visiting with the voters of Ward 3 over the next six weeks. It’ll be a quick election. I’m online at LindleyForSmyrna.com and I appreciate your time tonight.”

Moon also spoke.

“I’m glad and I’m thankful to have qualified for this election,” he said. “If I am appointed to serve Ward 3 I will give it my all. I will give my heart to the people and, like I told a gentleman today, I’ll be working for the people.”

Moon’s parents moved to Smyrna in 1964, and after leaving the area during the 1980s he moved back in 2001 and has been here since.

The candidates will have just six weeks to debate, scatter campaign signs across the area and meet with voters to make their case before election day.
