According to a news release from the Cobb County Police Department, the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is assisting the Austell Police Department with the investigation of a serious injury accident that happened yesterday at 5:34 p.m. on Veterans Memorial Highway near Davis Drive.
Investigators report that a 2007 Dodge Caliber was headed east on Veterans Memorial Highway. A 2011 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling west. The driver of the Dodge failed to maintain her lane and entered the center turn lane. The Dodge collided with the Chevrolet.
The driver of the Chevrolet, and 18-year-old woman from Austell, was taken to Cobb Hospital with injuries that are not expected to be life threatening The driver of the Dodge, a 36-year-old woman from Decatur was taken to Grady Hospital with injuries that are also not expected to be life threatening.
The collision remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3987.
The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
