According to a public information release from Officer Chuck McPhilamy of the Marietta Police Department, the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating the three-vehicle incident that occurred Friday, August 16, at about 10:15 p.m. on Cobb Parkway North at its intersection with Roswell Street.

Investigators determined that the driver of the Mustang was traveling southbound on Cobb Parkway, approaching its intersection with Roswell Street at a high rate of speed.
The traffic light for southbound Cobb Parkway was red.
The Marietta officers were also southbound on Cobb Parkway, approaching the red light and were nearly stopped for the light when their patrol vehicle was struck violently from behind.
After striking the patrol vehicle, the Mustang spun out of control and struck the rear of a Toyota Prius driven by a sixty-year-old Marietta man.
According to the public information release, “Both officers had to be extricated due to the damage to their patrol vehicle.”
The Mustang’s driver and both officers were transported to Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.
“We are grateful to report that both officers have since been released from the hospital,” McPhilamy wrote.
The Mustang’s driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has not yet been released from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator J. Henderson at 770-794-5384. While charges related to this crash are anticipated, they have not yet been taken.
