In recognition of World AIDS Day, which is Dec. 1, Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) announced in a press release that it will host a series of free HIV testing events across Cobb County to raise awareness and promote prevention.
The events are scheduled as follows:
- Monday, Dec. 1, 3–7 p.m. at Walgreens, 4120 Austell Road, Austell, GA 30106
- Thursday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at Chattahoochee Technical College, 980 South Cobb Drive, Marietta, GA 30060
- Saturday, Dec. 6, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. at Reflections of Trinity Food Pantry, 4037 Austell Powder Springs Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127
“It is vital that we continue to educate the community about HIV and HIV prevention methods that are available,” said Marie Paul-David, CDPH STI/HIV Director. “Increasing condom usage, learning more about PrEP and getting tested regularly are simple yet effective tools to ensure that everyone can maintain their optimal sexual health and wellness.”
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s 2023 HIV Epidemiology Surveillance Summary, Georgia ranks third in the nation for the highest rate of individuals living with HIV, following the District of Columbia and New York.
Globally, an estimated 38 million people live with HIV, with over 35 million deaths since the virus was identified in the 1980s, making it one of the most significant pandemics in history, according to the National AIDS Trust.
CDPH offers testing, counseling and outreach supported by trained counselors who can assist with risk-reduction strategies and next-step planning. For more information, residents may call 770-514-2815.
Cobb County is among the 48 counties nationwide identified in the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative due to a high incidence of recent HIV infections. The initiative aims to reduce new HIV diagnoses by 75% within five years and by 90% in ten years. More details can be found at cobbhiv.org.
