The Cobb County Public Library Celebrates National Poetry Month

By Kelly Johnson

National Poetry Month is an international celebration of literature, established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. The purpose of the celebration is to promote poetry’s importance to society and conversely, humanity. As the poets.org YouTube video suggests, poetry can make sense out of life. This has never been more prevalent than with poetry’s most dynamic form, rap, and despite its commercialization as “hip hop” in recent decades. Aside from the business and form of poetry as entertainment, common activities of celebration include poetry readings, workshops, and school-wide activities.

Charles D. Switzer Library has two events scheduled for National Poetry Month. Beginning April 1st and throughout the month, the library will host a Poet-Tree. A community activity, one can write a short poem on a paper leaf and add it to the tree. Poems can be of any nature, and if enough participants add to the Poet-Tree, it leafing-out will symbolize a community that is renewed, hopeful, and united in facing the new year.

On Saturday, April 18th at 2:00 PM, Switzer Library will host Context and Connections: A Poetry Workshop. And adult program, this workshop is two-fold. First, it will allow participants to create and share (i.e. read) their works; and second, it will allow poets to bring in a piece already written for critique. (That’s a single poem with no more than 15 lines.) For this poetry workshop, registration is required here.

Other events scheduled at Switzer Library are:

  • April Sensory Friendly Movie Monday at 11:00 AM
  • Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, April 6th
  • Haunted Mansion, April 13th
  • The Emperor’s New Groove, April 20th
