Following Georgia in July, with its 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than historical record and an average of 95-degree highs closing out its last week; summer in August, with the help of humidity, is expected to cling to the entire month, perhaps indignantly as thunderstorms are prone to burst open from drier-than-usual conditions.
To summer’s second full-month’s forecast, Mountain View Regional Library is apparently taking it easy. With limited events scheduled for August, the highlight of this month’s schedule is the library’s Page Turners Book Group, which will meet on Wednesday, August 5th at 10:30 AM—inside the air conditioned space of the library, for an hour and a half. This will be the last meeting of the summer season.
While the Pager Turners typically reviews a voted-on title of fiction and non-fiction, its last seasonal meeting is open to group members sharing their favorite book or author.
In this spirit, one of my favorite books that come to mind is The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin. As this reading occurred with a return to the pastime in 2022, its opening was as arid as the summer today; and while recognition was given to the fantasizing of the real-world social hierarchy that exists with American society today, it revealed a poignant truth about personal sacrifice—about what a mother toward the bottom end of any such hierarchy will sacrifice—that transcends social and identity politics. The Fifth Season is a powerful intro to The Broken Earth series. It is also a story in which the second person POV is executed exceptionally well (by Jemisin).
This is as close to participating in the August 5th meeting of the Page Turners Book Group as one can get; however, if there is interest in sharing with the group in person or of learning of others’ favorite works or authors, join it; or just take sanctuary at the library, reading, playing mahjong, crafting, or doing yoga. There is little doubt that Mountain View Regional Library will offer a worthwhile respite from the dog days of summer.
