A driver was seriously injured Friday night after a Ford Mustang left Church Road near Groover Drive in the Smyrna area and struck a fence and utility pole, according to Cobb County police.
The single-vehicle crash happened at about 8:42 p.m. Sept. 18 as the driver of a black 2022 Ford Mustang was traveling southwest on Church Road toward Groover Drive, police said.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Cobb County Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit, the driver failed to maintain a single lane for an unknown reason. The Mustang traveled onto the southern shoulder of Church Road, where it struck a metal chain-link fence and then a wooden electrical pole.
Police said the impact redirected the Mustang clockwise before it came to an uncontrolled stop on the shoulder, facing northwest.
The driver, whose identity was not released, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes.
“They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.
“They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
The STEP Unit is commanded by Lieutenant Lane Johnson.
