According to a report from Officer Chuck McPhilamy of the Marietta Police Department, a suspect in an alleged Marietta kidnapping and sexual assault veered into an oncoming lane while fleeing Marietta Police Sunday morning, resulting in a collision with injuries.

The report stated that the incident began at 9:04 Sunday morning when a woman called 911 and said she had been kidnapped, sexually assaulted and that the suspect had stolen her van.  She had locked herself in a bathroom at 455 South Marietta Parkway.  Marietta Officers located the van, a  traveling eastbound on South Marietta Parkway.  The officers pursued the suspect and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  The driver refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, turning onto Cobb Parkway and then westbound onto South Cobb Drive.

The suspect drove down the wrong side of a divided section of South Cobb Drive.  Other officers resumed the chase and the driver attempted to ram the marked patrol cars and civilian vehicles in the area.

Sarah O’Hara of the Cobb County Police Department reported that Andrew Head, 27, of Marietta, the suspect and driver of the van, lost control of the vehicle. It began to spin as a gray 2004 Acura MDX approached it from the west. The driver of the Acura tried to steer around the van but the vehicles collided.

The suspect and the driver of the Acura, Karen Brown, 50,  of Marietta, were both transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Head was booked into the Cobb County Jail on charges of robbery, kidnapping, three counts of rape, fleeing/attempting to elude, improper lane change, and two counts of aggravated assault on an officer.

Since the final accident occurred in Cobb County Police jurisdiction,  the Cobb Selective Traffic Enforcement  (STEP) unit was notified to investigate the collision.
