Serious injury collision I-75 and Windy Hill

Cobb County Police Department’s Specialized Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit reports that a collision resulting in serious injuries occurred Saturday morning , December 8, at around 12:10 a.m.on I-75 South just north of Windy Hill Road.

According to the report from STEP investigators, a red 2011 Honda Accord driven by Otis Nunes, 24, of Tallahassee, Florida was heading south in the left lane at a high rate of speed. Nunes changed lanes to the right and sideswiped a Subaru Forester, then collided with a Hyundai Sonata.

Both the Subaru and Hyundai spun to the left and rested on the left shoulder. The Honda continued south, crossing five lanes of traffic before coming to a rest .

Nunes exited his car and walked in front of it. The car was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer. The collision pushed his car into Nunes, causing him serious injuries.

He was taken to Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, but the injuries are thought to be non-life-threatening.

The Volvo continued south resting on the left shoulder. None of the occupants of the vehicles that were involved in the crash besides Nunes required medical attention.

The report also states:

“This collision remains under investigation by the STEP Unit and anyone with information is asked to call 770-499-3987.”

STEP Unit

The STEP Unit, which investigated this incident, is one ofthe department’s Special Operations units, and  is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:

“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
