Nelly Miles, the Public Affairs Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation ( GBI ) issued the following public information release this afternoon:
Cobb County, GA (October 12, 2018) – On October 12, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:08 am, CCPD officers responded to the apartment complex located at 6640 Akers Mill Rd in Atlanta regarding shots being fired. Additional witnesses reported a subject, identified as Matthew Chambers, age 34, shooting at vehicles in the complex and also pointing a gun at them. Officers located Chambers with a gun at a bus stop near the apartment entrance. During the encounter, officers discharged their weapons. Chambers was transported to WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s office for review.
