On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Smyrna Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 11:42 a.m., officers were dispatched to an office park parking lot located at 1800 Lake Park Drive, Smyrna, GA, in reference to a male subject, identified as Gary Fink, 68, of Cherokee County, with a gun. Officers responded and encountered Fink with a gun in the parking lot. Fink failed to comply with officers’ instructions to show officers his hands and made a sudden movement. One officer discharged his firearm, striking Fink. Fink was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A gun was recovered from the scene.

No officers were injured in this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
