According to a public information release from Officer Sydney Melton of the Cobb County Police Department, a motorcyclist was killed in an accident on Maxham Road in Austell Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Jeffrey Everett, 35, of Powder Springs, and his next-of-kin has been notified.
The accident is under investigation by the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit.
Investigators report that the accident happened at 7:08 a.m. on Maxham Road at the intersection with Old Alabama Road.
Everett’s Yamaha motorcycle was traveling north on Maxham Road when the driver of a 2013 Nissan Maxima attempted to make a left turn in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle collided with the Nissan.
Everett was transported to Grady Hospital and was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.

The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
