Sgt. Wayne Delk of the Cobb County Police Department sent out the following public information release this afternoon:
A pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles and killed on I-285 Westbound just west of Cobb Parkway in the early morning hours. According to investigators, at 4:39 a.m. an adult male, identified as 29-year-old Dustin A. Dalton of Canton, GA (next of kin have been notified), entered the westbound lanes of I-285 where he was struck by multiple vehicles to include a tractor-trailer. The scene extended across all westbound lanes and required a complete closure of westbound I-285 until 9:20 a.m.
Although no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the accident, there is an ongoing investigation, so if you have any information you are asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit at 770-499-3987.
The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
