The driver who was seriously injured in Friday’s collision on Mableton Parkway died of his injuries, according to a press release from Officer Sydney Melton of the Cobb County Police Department.

Clarence Chadwick, 86, of died of his injuries while at Wellstar Cobb Hospital where he was take after the accident. His next of kin has been notified.

The Cobb County Police Department Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a serious injury vehicle collision that occurred in Precinct Two on Friday, November 15, 2019, at 8:31 a.m. on Mableton Parkway at Bonanza Trail.

A red 2010 Ford Ranger was preparing to make a left turn onto Bonanza Trail from eastbound Mableton Parkway. A tan 2011 Chevrolet Traverse was traveling west on Mableton Parkway, approaching the intersection with Bonanza Trail, in the left travel lane. The Ford initiated its left turn in front of the Chevrolet. The Chevrolet struck the passenger side of the Ford.

The Ford rolled onto its driver’s side and then slid onto the shoulder of Mableton Parkway. The rear of the Ford then rode a guyed wire, that was attached to a power pole, and came to a final rest with the rear of the truck in an elevated position. The truck remained in contact with the guyed wire.

The driver of the Ford was identified as 86-year-old Clarence Chadwick of Marietta. Mr. Chadwick was transported to Wellstar Cobb Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as 55-year-old Anne Crane of Atlanta. She was transported to Wellstar Cobb Hospital with minor injuries.

The STEP Unit

The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:

“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
