A driver was seriously injured early Saturday after a pickup truck hauling a car trailer left I-75 and struck several trees near Shiloh Road, Cobb County police said.
The crash occurred at about 4:48 a.m. Aug. 29 on I-75 southbound, south of Shiloh Road, according to the Cobb County Police Department. The department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating the collision.
A preliminary investigation found that a gray 2024 Ram 3500 pulling a 2002 Take III car hauler trailer was traveling south on I-75 when the driver failed to maintain his lane, police said.
The pickup left the roadway on the right, traveled down a grassy embankment and struck several trees. The Ram came to rest at the tree line facing south, according to police.
The driver, whose identity was not released, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Police did not provide additional information about the driver’s condition.

The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes.
“They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.
“They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
The STEP Unit is commanded by Lieutenant Lane Johnson.
