Law enforcement impersonation scam targets families of jail detainees

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office and commissioner Monique Sheffield (in her monthly newsletter) are urging residents to be alert following reports of scammers posing as law enforcement officials and targeting family members of detainees. According to the sheriff’s office, callers claim that bond money must be paid immediately through PayPal, Cash App, or other payment platform. The scammers have also asked for money for someone to avoid arrest or resolve a pending legal matter.
Officials emphasize that the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office will never call and ask for money over the phone for any reason.
Sheffield and sheriff’s officials say residents who receive one of these calls should hang up immediately, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and check out any claims by contacting the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office at 770-499-4600.
