Acworth and Cobb County police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that happened Thursday night.
Police say a 47-year-old Woodstock man was headed eastbound on Lake Acworth Drive near Cottage Oaks Drive in a 2017 Ford F-150, while a 2007 Nissan Armada was headed westbound with 44-year-old Barbara Sotelo at the wheel.
Authorities say the driver of the Ford possibly suffered a medical episode which caused him to veer into the westbound lanes. The front left of the Nissan collided with the front left of the Ford.
Sotelo was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. A juvenile passenger in her car suffered life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Cobb Police say if you have any information on the accident, give them a call at 770-499-3987.The accident happened at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday.
The STEP Unit
The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes.
“They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.
“They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
The STEP Unit is commanded by Lieutenant Lane Johnson.
