A Cobb County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering from “significant” injuries after he was attacked by a detainee at the county adult detention center.
Authorities say the detainee is a murder suspect awaiting extradition to Tennessee. The deputy was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a broken jaw and a concussion.
The Cobb law officer wasn’t identified, nor did the sheriff’s office explain what led up to the fracas.
Sheriff Craig Owens says the deputy is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery. He calls the incident “a stark reminder that despite our best efforts, detention center operations can be extremely dangerous.” He says his people did a good job of mitigating and caring for the injured deputy.
The sheriff’s office criminal investigations unit is expected to launch a probe into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
