Georgia gas prices climbed to an average of $3.89 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline as Labor Day travel demand and elevated crude oil prices put additional pressure on drivers’ wallets.
The statewide average is 11 cents higher than a week ago, 7 cents higher than a month ago and 98 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA.
A year ago, Georgia drivers were paying an average of $2.91 per gallon.
At the current average, filling a 15-gallon tank with regular gasoline costs about $58.35.
“After a record-setting August, Labor Day weekend is shaping up to make history at the pump as well. Elevated crude oil prices and strong travel demand have combined to push fuel costs higher,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Despite the added expense, many Georgians still chose to hit the road and make the most of the long holiday weekend.”
Atlanta gas prices reach $3.90 per gallon
Atlanta’s average gas price reached $3.90 per gallon. Savannah had the state’s most expensive metro average at $3.96, followed by Hinesville-Fort Stewart at $3.93 and Macon at $3.91.
The least expensive metro markets were Albany at $3.81, Rome at $3.82 and Catoosa-Dade-Walker at $3.83.
What about Cobb County prices?
The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Cobb County is $3.89 per gallon this morning, the same as the statewide average.
What about EV charging rates?
EV charging rates were hovering around 42 cents per kilowatt hour at commercial DC fast charging stations nationally, slightly lower than that in Georgia at just under 41 cents.
Home charging is much cheaper, particularly during overnight off-peak hours. Check your local utility provider for rates.
National gas price hits $4.14
Nationally, the average price of regular gasoline reached $4.14 per gallon, up 7 cents from a week ago and 8 cents from a month ago.
AAA attributed continued pressure on fuel prices to crude oil prices above $90 per barrel, which have outweighed the seasonal decline in gasoline demand.
The national average is 32 cents higher than the previous Labor Day record of $3.82 per gallon, set in 2012. It remains below the all-time national record of $5.01 set June 14, 2022.
Georgia’s record high is $4.49 per gallon, set June 15, 2022.
