SOUTH COBB REGIONAL LIBRARY PREFACES HALLOWEEN WITH
LESSONS IN HORROR AND COSTUME CRAFTING
While serving a religious majority of approximately 55.3% Protestants, in Mableton, which arguably a percentage of this percentage of the denomination may have issue with Halloween, for its ties to paganism or devil worship, South Cobb Regional Library sustains the fun of the holiday, as a traditional part of its season, with a couple of programs.
Hosting The Georgia Room’s An Introduction to the Horror Film, this educational program will teach attendees about the long history of film techniques that spawned horror in the medium. To clarify, the subject of the presentation is about how the direction of the camera or the conceptualization of scenes cast fear on an audience, more so than what is filmed with the recreation of violence, gore, or death that have come to define American horror in twentieth century. Though, psychological horror and the horror of carnage are not mutually exclusive with some films.
From Georges Méliès’s 1869 Le Manoir du Diable (or House of the Devil, in America) featuring his pioneering “stop trick” and double exposure techniques; to Andy Muschietti’s 2017 It, the highest grossing horror film and thus most popular to date, with his use of sickly, dual-tone lighting, high-contrast backlighting, and hybridization of traditional and post-production filming techniques. This introduction to the horror film will be held on Tuesday, October 13th at 6 PM.
Two days before Halloween, Thursday, October 29th at 11 AM, the library’s Costume & Craft program will allow babies and toddlers (and respective families) to trial or show off their costumes while crafting for the holiday.
Aside from these two-program-preludes to Halloween, it’s worth mentioning that Discovery Stage returns to South Cobb Regional Library on Saturday, October 24th with its 1 PM performance, Scribbles and the Journey Home.
Other enriching and fun events scheduled at South Cobb Regional Library are:
• Book Bunch, Wednesday, October 7th at 4:00 PM
