A Thursday morning ribbon-cutting marked the expansion of Cobb County’s microtransit service into northwest Cobb, including areas in Kennesaw and Acworth.

The transit program launched in 2024 as a pilot project. Until Thursday, it was limited to Austell, Powder Springs and the southwest corner of Marietta.

The on-demand service will run Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rides cost $2.50 each.

Federal and state grants cover about 90% of the cost, with local funds covering the rest.

Commissioners approved the expansion plan in August on a 3-2 vote with Republican commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill voting against it.

Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid touted the program at the time, saying it increases options for drivers. Birrell criticized the expansion because the service is not limited to groups such as seniors, people with low incomes and people with disabilities — “people who really need it.”
