U.S. Rep. Karen Handel (R-Roswell) will face community organizer and gun control advocate Lucy McBath in November with a seat in the U.S. Congress at stake.
McBath defeated businessman Kevin Abel Tuesday in the Democratic primary runoff election and will face Handel Nov. 6. Georgia’s sixth congressional district includes northeast Cobb County, along with parts of DeKalb and Fulton counties.
A Cobb resident, McBath is perhaps best known for her views on gun control. Her only son, Jordan Russell Davis, was shot dead at a gas station in Jacksonville, apparently in a dispute over music. She works as a leader with groups including Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
McBath was the leader on primary day in May, and successfully carried that momentum into the runoff. She gathered 14,270 votes, or 53.8 percent, to Abel’s 12,258, or 46.2 percent.
In Cobb County, McBath enjoyed an even wider margin of victory, winning 4,389 votes, good for 60 percent, to Abel’s 3,053 votes and 40 percent share.
