Kennesaw State University‘s annual Campus Safety Day will be held Oct. 9, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Campus Green, at 565 Owl Dr, Kennesaw, GA 30144 on the KSU Campus.
Features of Campus Safety Day
KSU’s student nurses will give free flu shots to students, and the Student Health Services Flu Clinic will give advice on how to avoid the flu or to lessen its impact.
There will be a fire set in a mock dorm room, and the KSU Police and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office will bring members of their K9 units.
Rape defense course
Students will also learn about KSU’s Public Safety Rape Aggression Defense course, offered several times each year.
Fire in the mock dorm room
According to a news release from KSU, “At approximately 1:15 p.m., a mock dorm room, constructed near the main entrance to the Carmichael Student Center, will be set on fire with a lighted candle to demonstrate how rapidly a room can be engulfed by flames. A highlight of each year’s Campus Safety Day, the exercise comes during National Fire Prevention Week Cobb County firefighters will extinguish the blaze, and students will also have an opportunity to practice their own fire-fighting skills with a fire extinguisher on a smaller fire. KSU has more than 5,000 residence hall students on both campuses, and all housing units are equipped with sprinklers and fire extinguishers.”
The K9s
“K9s and their handlers from the KSU Police and the Cobb County Sheriff Department will educate students about the special training these dogs undergo to help apprehend suspects and protect law enforcement personnel as they encounter dangerous situations,” the press release states.
Equipment and vehicles
The KSU Police Mobile Command Vehicle, the KSU Critical Incident Response Trailer, the City of Marietta Police armored rescue vehicle and Cobb County fire trucks will be on the green.
Cobb County’s Bomb Truck will also be on hand, and a demonstration of the robots used to handle explosives will be performed.
Other information available at the event
The American Red Cross will give advice about what students should do in the event of crisis and emergency management situations. The FBI and members of the Cobb and Douglas County Public Health will also be on hand to distribute information and answer questions from students.
