According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) the Cobb County Police Department requested that the GBI investigate an officer-involved shooting in unincorporated Cobb County near Austell.

On Monday at around 10:05 p.m. Cobb County police responded to a suspicious vehicle call near Janet Lane and Davis Drive.  The officers encountered a man they believe to be Melchizedek Woodward in a U-Haul van that was reported stolen.

During the encounter an officer shot into the vehicle.  The subject fled the area on foot.  The officers didn’t know whether the suspect had been shot.

Woodward was found on Veterans Memorial Highway the next morning with several gunshot wounds, was taken into custody without incident, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of wounds that police believe he received the previous evening.

No officers were injured.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation, which will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office when completed.
