According to a public information release from Officer Sydney Melton of the Cobb County Police Department, the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred in Precinct One this morning at 7:56 a.m. on Cobb Parkway at Black Acre Trail.

The collision involved a motorcycle and an automobile.

According to the public information release:

A black 2007 Honda CBR1000 was travelling south on Cobb Parkway approaching Black Acre Trail. A blue 2007 Mercedes ML350 was northbound on Cobb Parkway at Black Acre Trail. The driver of the Mercedes initiated a left turn, towards Black Acre Trail, and entered the path of the Honda. The front of the Honda collided with the right side of the Mercedes. The driver of the Honda separated from the motorcycle.

The driver of the Honda motorcycle was identified as Marco Malvaez, 25, of Kennesaw. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 17-year-old woman from Acworth was not injured in the collision.

The STEP Unit

The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and  is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:

“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
