Officer Chuck McPhilamy of the Marietta Police Department reported in a public information release that the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a crash that resulted in life-threatening injuries to a 31-year-old Canton man.
The accident occurred on January 31, 2024, at around 9:45 a.m. on I-75 South, just past the Canton Road Connector interchange.
Investigators report that the Canton man was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer in the far-left lane on I-75 South.
He approached a minor accident involving a 2019 Subaru Impreza and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, both of which had pulled to the left shoulder.
For reasons unknown to investigators at this time, Lawson left his lane and drove onto the left-hand shoulder.
According to the public information release, “The Explorer struck the Chevrolet Equinox, causing the Equinox to then strike the Subaru Impreza. The force of the impact caused the Ford Explorer to travel across all travel lanes, striking the right-hand barrier before coming to rest on the right-hand shoulder.”
The Canton man who drove the Explorer sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Equinox sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in stable condition.
