Cobb County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid discussed economic  success, advances in social and human service programs and the need for affordable housing at the annual State of the County address Wednesday night at Jim Miller Park.

But she also drew several contrasts.

Neighborhoods in Cobb that were greatly prosperous, she said, contrasted with areas of the county where there were significant needs.

She hailed the county’s Triple-A bond rating that’s been in place for 28 years and Cobb’s estimated GDP of 82 billion, placing it in the number spot among Georgia’s 159 counties .

But she said the county needed more affordable housing but faced roadblocks, including pushback from residential groups.

Still another contrast; the county is a mix of long-term residents and newly-arrived families and that population diversity had increased, with more than 50 percent of the residents identifying as members of minority groups.

Cupid also highlights public safety improvements that have happened during the past year, . One example is the new police precinct six serving the northeastern section of the county and officers use of a real time crime center and drone technology she said has reduced crime by 23 percent.

The fire department has accomplished its own slate of improvements, with the opening of two new state-of-the-art fire stations.

Another was the opening of a brand-new 225. million, 65,000 square feet public safety firing range, replacing a longtime outdoor facility.

Upgrading he infrastructure came in for praise as well, as Cupid noted that more than 350 roads had been resurfaced.

“We are all teammates even if we have different weight,” she told the crowd. “And the most important person on Cobb’s team is you.”
