Kennesaw plans property tax increase above rollback rate, schedules public hearings

The City of Kennesaw announced plans to increase its 2026 property tax millage rate above the rollback rate, triggering a series of public hearings required under Georgia law before the rate can be finalized.

The proposed increase would raise the city’s maintenance and operations (M&O) millage rate by 4.25% above the rollback rate and the bond millage rate by 3.70% above the rollback rate.

Georgia law requires county boards of tax assessors to review property values annually for tax purposes. When recent property sales indicate increases in fair market values, assessors must reassess affected properties and adjust their taxable values.

After the county’s taxable property digest is completed, state law requires the calculation of a rollback millage rate that would generate the same amount of revenue as the previous year’s rate would have produced if reassessments had not occurred.

According to the city, the tentative budget adopted by the Kennesaw City Council requires a millage rate above the rollback rate. As a result, Georgia law mandates that the council hold three public hearings to allow residents an opportunity to comment before adopting a final millage rate.

  • Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
