Acworth police are warning the public about a scam artist who claims to be a police lieutenant.

Police say a man calling himself Lt. Williams has been calling area residents, claiming to be an Acworth Police officer and demanding payment over the phone for a fine connected to a supposed missed court date.

Acworth PD says they have no Lt. Williams on staff and that their officers won’t call and demand immediate payment for a missed court date or threaten arrest if the person getting the call doesn’t pay up.

They warn residents not to send money or provide gift cards, credit/debt numbers, banking information or any other financial data.

They say the scammers may use law enforcement lingo, spoof phone numbers or provide other information to make the call sound legitimate.

Anyone getting such a call is being urged to hang up and contact Acworth Police directly at 770-974-1232 to verify what they’ve been told.
