On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, the Marietta City Council voted to adopt a balanced budget for fiscal year 2024.
The budget, recommended by City Manager Bill Bruton and finance staff, was passed without any service reductions or tax or fee increases and included a property tax decrease, according to the city’s website.
Homeowners within Marietta City limits will see the fifth consecutive decrease in city property taxes due to a reduction to the millage rate.
This marks 20 years since the City of Marietta last raised property taxes, according to the announcement on the city’s website. Additionally, a property assessment freeze (Floating Homestead Exemption) has been in place since 2001, which ensures the appraised value of a homeowner’s residence remains unchanged as long as they maintain ownership of the property.
This exemption only applies to the City, Cemetery, Redevelopment, and Parks millage rates.
The total budget for fiscal year 2024 is $395.9 million, of which $73.7 million is allocated to the general fund budget.
This budget is used to fund general government services such as police and fire services, parks and recreation programs, code enforcement, planning and development, and streets and public works maintenance.
The millage rate supporting the General Fund’s governmental services will remain the same as it has been since 2003, while the total millage rate decreases from 4.817 to 4.692.
