Motorcyclist killed in collision with school bus on Milford Chase

According to Officer Sarah O’Hara of the Cobb County Police Department, the  Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal collision in which a motorcyclist was killed on Milford Chase near Mill Creek Court today at around 4:30 p.m.

STEP investigators report that an orange 2004 Yamaha YZFR1 motorcycle was heading south on Milford Chase at a speed greater than the posted 25 MPH limit. A yellow 2017 Blue Bird Cobb County school bus was heading northbound on Milford Chase. The motorcyclist left his lane on a curve in the road, his motorcycle overturned, and he and his Yamaha collided with the school bus.

George A. Leverett II, 51 of Marietta, was pronounced dead on the scene. The school bus driver, Cathy J. Vanzandt, 46, of Austell, was not injured. Three students were on board but they also were not injured.

The STEP Unit, which investigated this incident, is one of the department’s Special Operations units, and  is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:

“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
