According to a public information release from the Cobb County Police Department, the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred about 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon on C.H. James Parkway near Humphries Hill Road.
Investigators report that a 2004 Ford F-150 driven by Blair A. Rivers, 20, of Austell was headed south on C.H. James Parkway approaching Humphries Hill Road. A 2015 Nissan Rogue driven by Shelley K. Wimpey, 62, of Douglasville was headed north on C.H. James.
Wimpey tried to turn left onto Humphrey Hill Road and collided with the front of the Ford.
A front-seat passenger in the Nissan, Francis E. Walls, 82, of Atlanta was pronounced dead on the scene. Wimpey was taken to Grady with injuries not expected to be life-threatening. Rivers, the driver of the Ford, was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

What is the STEP Unit?
The STEP Unit, which investigates fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:
“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”
