April 15 might seem like a long time away, but in terms of reducing the tax-time stress, it’s best to begin preparing as early as possible.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers will offer free tax preparation services at six Cobb County library locations beginning in February, with appointments available through mid-April.

Assistance is available by appointment only, with the online reservation system opening Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026. Walk-ins will not be accepted, and same-day appointments are not available. Taxpayers can select preferred times through each library’s designated scheduling link or by email. In-person appointment requests can be made during scheduled tax-aide hours, but only for future dates.

The six participating libraries and their service schedules are:

Taxpayers with appointments will have their returns completed the same day. They may choose to wait at the library or return later to pick up completed documents.

For self-preparers, Cobb County libraries will stock federal 2025 1040 forms and instruction booklets while supplies last. Additionally, up to 10 pages of federal or state tax forms may be printed for free, though instruction manuals are not included. Library staff cannot provide tax advice or guidance on form selection.

Residents are encouraged to visit irs.gov or dor.georgia.gov/taxes for tax filing information, including virtual resources and additional assistance options such as the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The federal tax filing deadline is Wednesday, April 15, 2026. This includes the deadline to file returns, request extensions, or pay any owed taxes.
