Despite facing two challengers, Susan Wilkinson earned a third term on the Smyrna City Council Tuesday night, avoiding a runoff by winning more than half the vote.

Wilkinson, first elected to represent Ward 5 in 2011, drew opposition from nursing executive Suz Kaprich and Neighbor’s Feed & Seed Owner JD Smith. The incumbent picked up 443 votes, good for 51.81 percent and just enough to avoid a Dec. 3 runoff. Smith finished with 340 votes (39.77 percent) and Kaprich received 72 votes (8.42 percent).

A retiree, Wilkinson pledged during the campaign to push for the redevelopment of South Cobb Drive and preserving green space. Her next term runs from Jan. 1, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2023.
