The Cobb County Police Department‘s STEP Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred Sunday evening on Ebenezer Road.

According to investigators, the crash happened at approximately 6:24 p.m.

Preliminary findings indicate that a 31-year-old Roswell man was traveling southbound on Ebenezer Road while operating a 2009 Harley-Davidson FHX motorcycle. At the same time, an 82-year-old Marietta man in a 2010 Honda Accord was traveling northbound on Ebenezer Road, accompanied by two family members.

Investigators determined that the motorcycle crossed into the northbound lane. The rider then lost control, and the motorcycle slid into the path of the oncoming Honda. The vehicles collided in the northbound lane.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The occupants of the Honda were transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with minor injuries.

The STEP Unit

The STEP Unit, which investigates serious or fatal traffic crashes, is one of the Cobb County Police Department’s Special Operations units, and is described on the web page of the Cobb County Police Department as follows:

“The Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is responsible for investigating all fatal traffic crashes, enforcement of traffic laws in those areas which analysis indicates an elevated amount of crashes. 

“They are also responsible for the administration and execution of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. 

“They also take part in special security details, and investigate crashes involving Department vehicles when requested.”

The STEP Unit is commanded by Lieutenant Lane Johnson.
