On Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. there will be a meeting to get public comments on the performance of the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD). The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) is examining the policies and procedures of Cobb police as part of the CCPD’s voluntary accreditation. The meeting will be held at Cobb County Police Precinct 5, 4640 Dallas Highway, Powder Springs (see the map at the bottom of this article).
If you can’t attend the meeting you can provide input by phoning 770-499-4123 from 1 to 3 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
CALEA was created in 1979 by the joint efforts of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). It accredits police and sheriff’s departments, training facilities, public safety communications centers, and campus security.
According to its website CALEA’s goal is to:
- Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities;
- Formalize essential management procedures;
- Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices;
- Improve service delivery;
- Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and
- Increase community and staff confidence in the agency.
