QUALIFICATIONS:
Mayor:
To be eligible for the office of Mayor:
- Shall be at least 21years of age.
- Shall meet the requirements of a qualified voter of the city, as prescribed by state law.
- Shall not be ineligible for public office pursuant to code section 45-2-1 of the O.C.G.A.
The residency requirement for a candidate for Mayor shall be
- 12 months residency within the municipality.
- Shall not be eligible who has been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude unless such person’s civil rights have been restored.
- Shall continue to reside within the city limits for which elected during term of office
Council:
To be eligible for the office of Council:-
- Shall be at least 21 years of age.
- Shall meet the requirements of a qualified voter of the city, as prescribed by state law.
- Shall not be ineligible for public office pursuant to code section 45-2-1 of the O.C.G.A.
- Shall be a bona fide resident of the ward from which he seeks election for the same period of time required by code section 45-2-1 of the O.C.G.A. for residency of municipal officers within the city, which is 12 months residency.
- Shall not be eligible who have been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude unless such person’s civil rights have been restored.
- Shall continue to reside within the city ward for which elected during term of office.
Board of Education:
To be eligible for the office of Board of Education a person:
- Has to be a citizen of the United States;
- Has to be at least 21 years of age;
- Has to be registered to vote as prescribed by state law; and
- Has to meet the residency requirements set forth in the Marietta City Code Section 2.202(e), which reads: “The residency requirements for a person seeking to be elected to the board of education shall be:
- (1) In the case of a general election, the person shall be a resident of the ward for which the office is sought on or before July 1 next preceding the date of taking of office and, in addition, the person shall be a resident of the City of Marietta on or before January 1 next preceding the date of taking office; and
- (2) In the case of a special election, the person shall be a resident of the ward for which the office is sought for a minimum of six (6) months next preceding the date of taking of office and, in addition, the person shall be a resident of the City of Marietta for a minimum of 12 months next preceding the date of taking of office; provided, however, that the residency requirements for 1993 shall be the lessor of the requirements set forth in this paragraph or the effective date of this law pursuant to Section 5 of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 1973 (C).”
