According to a public information release from Officer Chuck McPhilamy of the Marietta Police Department, the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal accident in which a Marietta pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run.
The incident occurred early this morning at around 2:23 AM on Cobb Parkway near Polytechnic Lane.
According to investigators an 81-year-old Lawrenceville man was driving a 2008 Ford Taurus X southbound on Cobb Parkway when he fatally struck a pedestrian, a 36-year-old Marietta man, who was walking southbound on Cobb Parkway on the right shoulder.
Officer McPhilamy informed the Courier that the pedestrian has been identified, but police have not yet been able to notify his next-of-kin, so his name is being withheld.
The driver of the Taurus did not stop and left the scene without rendering aid or notifying 911.
The public information release continues:
“The suspect vehicle was located by Emerson Police Department a short time later, stopped in a northbound lane of travel on Highway 41 in Bartow County. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured in the collision but was displaying signs of confusion. He was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for medical evaluation.
“The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Anyone with information regarding this crash is urged to contact Investigator K. Bedford at 770-794-5364.”
